I have
lived in
Australia
for over
45 years
and it is
still the
only
country I
call
"HOME".
I was
raised,
educated,
married,
had my
family
here all
my
childhood
friends
are also
here, a
lifetime
of
memories
and the
essence of
my life
are here.
So with
this in
mind I
wanted to
make these
special
pages to
honor my
country.
I
currently
reside in
Ohio.
U.S.A. (my
second
home) but
I make
very
frequent
trips home
because
most of my
family and
my friends
live in
Sydney and
it’s
surrounding
suburbs.
A
BRIEF
HISTORY OF
THE
AUSTRALIAN
FLAG:
On January
1st 1901
Australia
became a Federation, and on September 3rd of the
same year
the
Australian
flag flew
for the
first time. The
Australian
national
flag, as
we know it
today, is
based on
this
design.
The design
was born
from a
world wide
competition
first
launched
in
November
1900 by a
journal called the "Review" of reviews.
A prize of 50 Pounds was offered for the
winning
design.
The
criteria
set down
was to
incorporate
both the
Union Jack
and the
Southern
Cross into
the
design.
In
April 1901
the
Commonwealth
Government
also
announced
it would
run a flag
competition
with a
prize of
75 pounds,
it was
agreed to
combine
the entry
submissions
of both
competitions
and the
prize
money was
boosted to
200 Pounds
by the
Havlock
Tobacco
Company.
Over 30
000
entries
were
submitted
world
wide, the
prize
money was
divided
amongst 5
people,
all who
submitted
designs
which were
very
similar.
The
winners
were
announced
by the
Australian
Prime
Minister
of the
time, Mr.
Edmund
Barton and
the flag
was flown
for the
first time
on the 3rd
of
September
1901.
